Imagine Designing Your Own Cup… and Winning the World Championship

What if your ideal coffee cup didn’t exist—so you designed it yourself?

That’s exactly what Du Jianing, the first woman to win the World Brewers Cup (WBrC) in 2019, did. Partnering with ORIGAMI, she co-created the Sensory Flavour Cup—a beautifully balanced vessel crafted to enhance aroma, mouthfeel, and clarity.

The Origami Sensory Flavour Cup has become my go-to cup when tasting pour-over coffee. This cup isn’t just elegant—it’s engineered for flavour. With its wide bowl and tapered mouth, it captures and intensifies aroma like a wine glass, bringing your coffee tasting experience to a whole new level.

The first time I used it, I was blown away by the intensity of the aroma—it felt almost explosive. Especially in that moment when hot coffee is just poured in, the fragrance rises and hits you immediately, making you slow down and focus on what’s in your hands.

Aroma Comes First

The round and wide body of this cup allows the coffee to spread naturally, releasing aromas across a larger surface. This design is not just for looks—it truly enhances how the aroma unfolds, particularly for floral or fruity coffees.

I love how the wide opening encourages you to bring your nose close to the surface. Holding the cup with both hands, leaning in to smell—it creates a sense of immersion that’s hard to get with other cups. Drinking from this cup feels less like drinking, and more like entering a conversation with the coffee.

Every Sip Holds More Aroma

The gently tapered rim traps and directs the rising aroma straight to your nose, adding an extra layer to every sip. It turns the act of drinking into an act of tasting—every detail feels intentional.

The Pink Version – Sweetness in Colour

I personally love the pink version. Not only is it visually soothing, but it also psychologically enhances perceptions of sweetness and soft fruity notes. It’s interesting how colour can subtly influence your tasting experience.

A Few Usage Notes

  • Average heat retention – because of the wide mouth, the coffee cools quickly. Preheat the cup and drink soon after brewing.
  • Deep body – cleaning requires you to reach in, and without a handle, it needs extra care to avoid slipping. I hand-wash it rather than using the dishwasher.
  • Slow sipping is key – this is not a cup for distracted drinking; it invites you to slow down and savour.

How Does It Compare to the Other Sensory Cups?

All three cups in the Sensory Series were designed with mindful brewing and tasting in mind—but they each bring a unique dimension to the experience:

Feature Sensory Flavour Cup Sensory Filter Cup Sensory Asymmetry Cup
Shape Round, bulging body Tall, tulip-shaped Low, wide, with asymmetric rim

Why Choose It?

This cup is for coffee lovers who want to slow down and truly taste. It’s not just a vessel—it’s a tool designed by a world champion to bring out every nuance in your brew.

Final Thoughts

The Flavour Cup might not offer the dynamic playfulness of the Asymmetry Cup, nor the generous clarity of the Filter Cup. But if you love delicate flavours, value aroma, and enjoy slowing down with your coffee, this cup will likely become the one you reach for most often.

Brew your favourite coffee, take your time, and let this cup draw you into the aroma. You might just taste something new.
